The tracks on my leopard are the same type used on the 1/6 challenger 2. I keep having links break on one side. Does anyone know of another manufacturer of tracks or another set of tracks more robustly designed? I can send dimensions on the links if this would help.

Hello Sean,

You should claim the tracks at Mark. The guarantee from Alexei is excellent, no questions asked.
Because the problem occurs on one side only, you might check the allignment of the wheels on that side, the fit of the track on the sprocket, the smoothness of movement between the individual links and the tension of the track.
Just my piece of cake.

Cheers,

I have sent mark an email. So did my wife8o she isnt pleased at this. I cant run the thing for more than 10 minutes. I had the tracks off 2 times already and have not seen any kinks or binding. All the road wheels roll freely. I have seen voids on some of the breakl areas. They tend to snap where the rubber pad is which where the track is also its weakest. The only thing i noticed is a slight wobble on the left drive sproket.I may remove that to see if the axel is kinked or bent. I hope that isnt the issue. Just a bit miffed since i have wasted 3 weekends dealing with this instead of enjoying the vehicle. To top it off i did manage to get some good pics of it fully built and repainted yesterday and my camera decides to go out on me. So it will be a while still. Im thinking i should put this thing on blocks for a few months. take it apart and get the replacement bits from mark. Then take a month of leave rebuilding it from the ground up.

I will try to post a pic of the offending parts tomorrow. I have to get a new digital camera first.
Yes it does run off a 24V system. I think this may have something to do with it too. The tracks were designed when 12V was the norm. They may not be used to the stresses. Aside from the links breaking the rest of the vehicle seems mechanically sound. I will do my best to get the left side apart tomorrow and get pics of the alignment of the suspension.
Could this also be caused due to the fact there is no central support on the drive sprocket like the tamiya leopard? so it is allowing the track to bow under the stresses?I had contemplated making something like the parts on the tamiya leo to assist in track guidance and control. right now the sprockets are just the teeth on the ends and a bar in the middle for housing the axel. It could be that all i need to do is add more support in that area to assist the tracks.

Hope you get this worked out. From the sounds of your description, the metal has porosity in it (the pockets of air in the track blocks).

Might have gotten a batch of bad pads or something. Are the track castings aluminum?

Wolfgang. I got the new camera today but it is too late to take good pics. I will take some tomorrow. I dont know if you have seen the leopard in person yet. I hope to give you some insight if you like. There are some peculiar things about this model. Send me a PM or Email if you have any questions. I see from your sigline you have a stake in this matter.

Wolfgang. I found the source of the problem. I didnt notice it today until i walked around behind the tank with the tracks off though. The rear road wheel axel or mount is misaligned. The bottom of the wheel goes outward and the front of it goes inward. This is most likely what is causint the track to twist and torque to break the tracks. Aside from being loaded into the back of my truck this vehicle has never left the ground and has not been on any rough terrain. I have sent these pics to mark as well. WOW. I was suprised to see this.

Hi Sean,

Good to hear that the probable cause of your problem has been located. So much for wheel allignment :shock1:
I think you should claim the complete wheelunit including swingarm etc. etc. The damage could be done to the wheelaxle or the wheelhub/bearing seats. Fortunately it is the last roadwheel so you only have to dismount the rear sprocket to get it off.
Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Actually i dont have to take off the rear sprocket. This is good as it is less work. Im going to go study it and tinker now that i have 3 hours of daylight to use. It could be that the arm itself is out of alignment and may just need to have the 10mm bolt inside loosened and the wheel adjusted. Then its tracks back on and hopefully the left side will be as trouble freeas the right. I am still getting a full new track from mark since i dont know of any other problems from the stress this caused.

SUCESS!!! I tested my theory out and it IS the idler mount that is snagging the tracks. If the idler mount is lowered by even a fraction of an inch it makes the track path follow right into it. It wont snag all the link ends but just a random few. Fortunately it snagged the same damaged tracks it did last time. For now the Leo will remain static until Mark returns from holiday and sends the links But once they are here the grinder will be mounted in the drill and the offending area removed. Once this is removed i will get the same performance out of the left side that i do the right. I have not had a single issue with the right side. This idler mount is the last culprit in a line of tweaks needed.

Might want to recommend to Alex to do this grinding before shipping out any more. It will save future owners and the distributors alot of hassle. I had a good hour run today and this was even on damaged links The only issue i had aside from the track was the drive chain on the left side had popped where alex had used a screw and a nut to secure it. The screw sheared. I just took a length of the extra track pin and inserted it bent it to a U shape and it works good as new. The leo is getting its claws sharpened slowly but surely
