Hello,

I hope someone may be able to help me with the following questions:

What is the current status of the BergePanther being restored at the WTS Koblenz? Are there any recent photos? The WTS site no longer seems to have any info.

Secondly I am looking for any unpublished photos of BergePanthers, specifially to see how the Tow Bar (Schwere Abschleppstangen) was secured to the rear deck between the engine hatch and the superstructure. I have collected many photos of the vehicle but cannot make out this detail in any of them. Most drawings eg Trojca, Spielberger, Doyle seem to be making a guess at this fitting if it existed at all!

Lastly do any of you have a copy of the "D 659/4 Bergen von Panzerkampfwagen; vom 25.1.44"? Would anyone help me by translating some sections into English?

Answers to any of these question would be very much appreciated.

Cheers
Fabrice

Hi Fabrice,

as far as I know, I am afraid that you won't see any details of the WTS Bergepanther at this stage and I guess it will take some more time and extensive work until this wreck is transformed into a condition once being a representative reference.
As I don't know in what area you are living at present, I can only suggest you to visit the Saumur Tank museum, they got one version over there based on a "G" hull.

Secondly I think they got one "A" version in Munster Tank museum, but I am not quite sure about that.
For this, better check their website, or directly call the administration of the museum:

I do not have the book you are talking about, but if you send me the text via email that should be translated, I will do that for you.

Hope that helps and maybe someone over here has got some more detailed & helpful info for you.

best regards
Uwe

Uwe,

Many thanks for you reply.

I am familiar with the Ausf. G Saumur example and have several photos of "L'Hibou", the Owl, as this vehicle was nicknamed before it was (over)restored. But none of the fittings I described. Perhaps someone who has visited recently took a photo of this part? Being based in London, I have not visited Saumur for since 1984!

The WTS example is an Ausf D. There is a working winch, donated by the British research establishment at Chertsey, Surrey, which also came from an Ausf. D evaluated there in 1946. The remainder of the vehicle was scrapped. My contact thinks the winch is in storage at Munster.

The really rare part is the earth spade. No examples have survived anywhere!

I have the "Bergen von PzKfw" booklet myself so I will scan and forward a few relevent pages, if I may, for your translation.

I have spent two years building a 1/6th scale working model
of a BergePanther Ausf G, and I hope to finish it this year. However, there is an English saying " The Devil is in the Detail".

Any help from fellow modelers in Germany will be much appreciated.

Cheers
Fabrice

... of course you may, as I already offered, please use my private email mentioned in my previous post.
Further more I' ll try to check each vehicles' status of Munster & WTS. As soon as I'm able I'll provide you with more info and hopefully, some reference pics concerning the tow bars' brackets on the engine deck.

By the way - maybe this link will help you a little bit more, it's the actual condition of the Bergepanther in Saumur:

Peter,
Thank you for the offer I will be in touch.

Uwe,
Thank you for repeating your offer too.

The link you gave has been most helpful. The collection of photos is a gold mine of small details!

In one photo there is clearly visible, one of a pair of upright posts welded to the engine deck plate. This is the fitting I was looking for and confirms that H. Doyle's 1997 drawing in Panzer Tracts No16 is correct but details of the Schwere Abschleppstangen in the same drawing are not.

Thank you for sharing this information with me.

Cheers
Fabrice
