Past month I spent trying to find a way to cast road wheels. My initial idea was tu use spin castting method. This is the quality level I achieved:
Rather poor
So i ordered brass casting of my patterns and result is far better:
Maybe the surface finish is a bit rough but on the other hand - I will not use glue here Wheel halves are soldered.

Yes, yet I do not have anything interesting to show for now.
In the meantime by accident I managed to get my turret casted in professional foundry. This time it is casted iron
But I do not have the product in hand yet - machining of that casting is more difficult than in case of aluminium.

Almost a year passed... Well - I'd like to say that the model is ready, but unfortunately real life have sometimes priority over hobby
Anyway - despite my laziness I still have several things to show
First – the project in Fusion 360 takes form. Before July I was drawing only small parts – wheels, tracks, turret...
Second - turrets. I got my hands on cast iron shells and this is how it looks like now:
Third – gearbox. It will have two sections – external (essentially it is a part of lower hull) and internal.
External gerabox is ready:
0,8kg of casted and machined brass It will be filled with oil after hull soldering and final assembly.
Fourth – test cuts
I am also working on smaller parts – swing arms, periscope covers, hooks, exhaust covers, suspension springs covers etc. A dozen of patterns are ready and will be casted with lost wax method (well in this case I am not doing the casting myself... and it allready took three months I am loosing hope).
Some parts (like roadwheel hubs, which you can see on the photos) I am making using the press stamping. I hope that I will make the rear deck using the same method.
By the way - I wish you all Happy New Year!

Next step - the hull. It will be made of brass, all elements will have in-scale thickness. I am also trying to keep as many technical features of original as I can.
This is the first part of my 3D puzzle - 1,1kg glacis plate
Driver's hatch is cut with 20degrees of inclination.

Konrad,
the casting of iron is the highest level you can reach as an amateur model builder. In addition to this, there is the complicated shape of the turret.
With the "original" iron armor thickness you create a massive and very special model.
In admiration,
Reinhard

Thank you very much
Past few weeks I spent some time preparing the remaining hull parts. Perspective of soldering that big jigsaw was quite scary. Yet finally I did it I soldered the whole construction in one evening. Here is how it looks like now:
As I could not make real welds I left some space where needed to put some epoxy putty. I hope this way I will have beter results.
Right now all what I prepared weights about 24kg (with cast iron turret). This excludes all mechanical parts, drive wheels and tensioners, swing arms, suspension springs and covers, battery and motors, also all smaler and thinner parts like deck cover and fenders. I gues that final weght of my model will be over 30 kg 34 would be nice...
I also made "gearbox" for the bevel gears.
And now I have question to you. My life changed a bit this month. For profession-related reasons I moved a few kilometers away from my home and workshop. Instead of living in southern Poland now I live in eastern France...
Currently I have two ongoing projects - this one and IS-2. But as temporarly I can not phisically continue my passion I want to "virtually" start another one.
I am looking for a good object for another project but to do it I need good documentation.
Could you please advise me what tank I coud make?
I will be also very grateful for info about german tank museums situated near Strassburg.

Great thanks! I see they have Renault FT-17 - this is one of tanks I was thinking about A few castings and a lot of rivetting.
What should I do to get museum's permit to measure it? Shall I write to them an official request or my personal charm might be enough?
Please let me know how would a german modelist do it?

Well, I took into account all "pros" and "cons" and instead of starting another project I decided to develop this one.
