Hello everybody,
First of all my apologies for not writing in German. My name is Konrad, I am from Poland and unfortunately I can only speak English, French and Polish :(
Secondly - if I put my topic in wrong section please move it. I know it is suposed to concern your group project, but well - somehow I managed to miss your forum at all and I found out about your initiative yesterday evening...

Decided to post here since I see our assumptions regarding the modell are quite similar.

Straigt to the point - about two years ago I scratchbuilt a T-34-85 in 1:16 scale. I love it for reliability and mobility, but I always had a feeling that it is too small. So at the begining of last year I decided to start a construction of similar model, but in 1:10 scale.

I want to have:
- solderded brass hull, maintaing as much as possible the original thickness,
- casted Zamack (ZnAl) tracks,
- casted ZnAl late type \\\"spider\\\" wheels with rubber bands.
- generally - I want to cast everything what should be casted using or centrifugal casting or greensand,
- brushless powerpack with custom gearbox,
- FPV - at least 3 cameras.

Luckly for me there are two T-34s in running condition in my town. If I need any information - measures, photos I just visit one :) During last year I developed contact with owners and they even borrowed me a short section of thack when I was drawing plans.

What I have done... Well - instead of starting with model parts I had to start with upgrade of my workshop so I built 3d printer, centrifugal casting machine, vulcanisation tool etc. I developed a few techniques. This job takes time...

At this moment I have:

Tracks.
Casted in 230mm diameter centrifugal form:

Drive wheels.
In this case I failed miserably to cast the parts using 230mm form. I am going to try bigger one (300 and 350mm diameter):

I also made drive wheel and tensioner, but it looks more or less the same as drive wheel and I have exactly the same casting issue.

Exhaus covers:

Turret.
I also intend to cast ZnAl turret - I am struggling to print a model which will let me make greensand form and the core. Let's say I still have a lot of work to do...

Turret above is printed (theoretically...) as the final part should look like - just to show me the size and induce imagination :)
If I fail to cast it myself I will send my 3d printed parts to professionals an order it to be casted in bronse.

Thank you for any comments or suggestions :)

hallo Konrad,

I just found your construction report and I been keen on it. I am highly impressed as you manufacture everything yourself and even with your own machines. Looking at the ZAMAK track links, they are amazing with the original surface and very well readeble serial number. Is the wheel casted out of Zamak as well? Fantastic!
As you want to use the original thickness of the plating, I assume that your model in the scale 1:10 probably weighs about 50 kg?
Your workshop seems so well equipped, are futher models to follow? Or do you use the machines also work-related?

Kind regards,
Reinhard

Hi,
Thank you for motivating comment :)
In fact - I got stuck a bit as far as model construction is concerned. Currently I don't have much free time so I decided to keep upgrading my workshop and focus on tools and technical solutions. 1:10 scale is more challenging than 1:16 so in second half of 2017 I purchased old big manual lathe and mill and I am working on cnc-retrofit of my small lathe.

Below I post a picture of my evolving "mancave" (sorry for the size). Despite the looks it is 100% hobby (as you can see - I have no garage any more :( ). Professionally I am an accountant...

Models to follow... That is a difficult question. My long-term plan is (if I do not fail with turret casting...) to continue building soviet tanks. I'd like to buitd T-72 next since I have access to real vehicle (making good plans should not be a big problem) and I can make a 2-axis turret stabilisation.

T-34 will of course remain to be my priority and I will continue construction as soon as my timing issues are at least partially solved. Wheels will be casted and machined. Tank weight in this scale should be 1/1000 of original - in theory 26,5 kg. I think my model might be haveier, but I guess it won't by more than 35kg.

Cześć Konrad,

witam tutaj na forum. To są świetne castingi. Czy mogę się zapytać, z którego zakątku Polski pochodzisz?

A small step forward - rubber wheel bands.
Introducing injection molding to workshop took me some time, but it looks like a very useful technique.

Thank you :)

Now I'm continuing work on this element:

Mine will have slightly different design and first casting attempts show that effect maight be even better :)

Here it is :) My first usable turret casting

At this stage it has no additional cast markings characteristic for this type of turret. I am wonderig if I should have them casted or manualy added during finishing process.
What you see on the picture has not been machined yet. I just removed the core (I have also slightly damaged the cast in the process... next time I will be hammering more carefully). In the next steps I will cut bottom of the turret to fit a large bearing and the upper side to fit the turret roof. Other modifications (pistol ports, cuts for machine gun and optics, external hooks and handles) will follow.
Gun mantlet will be modified since the one I made is inaccurate. My mistake...

Barrel itself will be mounted on linear bearings, I hope I will be able to build an effective recoil system

hello Konrad,
the cast of your turret looks very good. Hopefully you took pictures of each step to get there?
Which cast devices do you use for this?
Certainly many of us would be interested in the photos.
Working on the lathe and milling machine is one thing - but casting a turret with such a different shape is something completely different.
You deserve my respect for it.

I did not take any photos during the casting. This job is risky and as it was my third attempt I wanted to have both hands free. Maybe next time I will make a short film.

Unfortunately casting itself is just a top of the iceberg as far as the whole process is concerned. It probably took me about a year to get to this point (or three years, if I take into accoubt the workshop).
On one of previous photos I shown you a printed model of the turret... one of many. Finally the whole "set" necessary to prepare the mold is composed of 12 large printed elements, including a tool allowing me to make a sand core. I probably had to "reeinvent" many basic steps and methods :(

I am still very far from completing the model, but I am also already very happy - I wasn't sure if it is possible to make such a big element without acces to real foundry.

By the way - my turret maintains not only external shape, but also keeps the correct wall thicness :) I intend to stay as close to original as possible.

Commander's coupola is ready. Well... almost ready, it is still missing the cover. I intend to make one that rotates as real one.
